Collins Badewa is a Nigerian based fashion blogger, he is currently a student of the University of Ilorin studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering and an indigene of Osun state, Nigeria.
In this interview he talks about the challenges of being a male blogger in a female dominated industry.
Read excerpts below:
What inspired you to venture into the world of fashion blogging?
Well, I needed a space to explain my style by publishing rather than talking and blogging was the closest and also turned out to be the most interesting.
Describe your sense of style in 3 words….
Experimental, Defiant and Oxymoronic (mixing of opposite elements – Modern and Vintage)
What are the challenges you have faced as a male fashion blogger in a female dominated industry?
Well, the stereotype is definitely a real thing. It’s been challenging especially in a country where most males don’t pay attention to fashion bloggers. I’ve found my way around that though.
What is that one fashion accessory that you absolutely cannot leave the house without?
That would be a pair of sunglasses. I’m a sunglasses hoarder. And also, my eyes are very sensitive to light so it’s necessary.
How do you combine blogging with other areas of your life?
It wasn’t easy at first but the key is planning and time allocation. Have strict schedules you follow.
What’s your favorite sneaker brand?
New Balance. They have really nice colors and structures.
From your Instagram feed, we noticed that your style has this Retro, cool kid vibe to it. Is this intentional?
It isn’t intentional but I’ve had similar things said to me by other people. I guess that’s what my style revolves around.
What has been your most memorable highlight on this journey?
Well, I’m not where I want to be but I’ve had some really memorable moments. I’ve been featured in a magazine, some fashion websites home and abroad. Being called to speak as a panelist at an event.
What are your other interests apart from fashion?
I love to cook and not to brag but I’m good at it. And you know what they say, “Turn your talents to fortunes”.
Kindly share with us your future plans as a fashion blogger…
I’d be lying if I said this is not more than a hobby. I’ve been paid twice as a brand influencer which felt good. I’d love that to continue and for that to continue I have to take things up a notch which I plan to. Fingers crossed, the future is a big place.
