We recently interviewed “Bella“. She’s the 1st of lady of one of Nigerian’s newly established record label “Tinny Entertainment” which houses “Omo Alhaji” crooner YCEE.
Read excerpts of the interview below:
What is your full name?
My real name is Mabel Oine Alubo but I go by the stage name ‘Bella’.
What do you do?
I’m a recording and performing artiste under Tinny Entertainment. I make great music. ‘Radio’ was my first single under my record label. It features Ycee and has a really cool video out. My newest single is called ‘Gimme Love’ and has a video directed by Clarence Peters.
Where are you from and where are you based?
My family is originally from the idoma parts of Benue state but I was born and raised in Jos, Nigeria where I started Music. I lived there till I signed my record deal with Tinny in January 2017. I’m based in Lagos, Nigeria now.
What inspired you to get into entertainment?
My love for writing. I’ve always liked stories, poems and words in general. I started consistently writing poetry when I was 12 and it evolved into rap lyrics when I was 16. Since then I’ve put out covers, singles and 2 projects.
People like Eminem, Lauryn Hill, M.I, The Plantashun Boiz, Pink and Lil Wayne played a big role as well.
How long have you been doing music for?
I put out my first recording, a freestyle on Kanye West’s ‘Theraflu’ beat in 2012 after I listened to a version by Angel Haze haha. I became consistent with releases after I finished university in 2015 but I wouldn’t say I was doing music on a professional level until after I got signed in 2017.
You recently signed a record deal with Tinny Entertainment and became label mates with top rapper YCEE, tell us all about it…
Apart from promoting myself online and gathering a following on social media, I used to email people I considered influencers in the entertainment industry. I got Osagie Okunkpolor to listen to my music and she shared it with Tinny. He offered me a record deal after some screening Studio sessions in December 2016. Ycee, Dapo Tuburna and Damilare are like family to me now and Tinny Mafia is about to own 2018.
Who do you look up to as a role model in the entertainment industry?
I don’t think I have a particular person. There are so many people that inspire me in one way or another and I’m always open to learning.
What’s been your most interesting music video shoot till date?
Both of my video shoots were super interesting. Theophilus King is a very young and talented director. Watching him shoot for like 13 hours without taking a break was quite amazing. There were lots of young people on set and that was fun. Clarence Peters is one of the best directors in the entire country. He’s very professional and precise. He had every single detail figured out and made the entire shoot very easy and stress free. My stylists Mag Payne and Laurel Maria are really cool too. I like the getting dressed parts of video shoots best because I get to change outfits several times and I’ve always loved playing dress up lol.
From your music videos and Instagram feed we can tell you have a some interest in fashion. Describe your sense of style in 3 words.
Comfortable. Effortless. Dope.
What’s your favorite fashion designer right now?
I’d say Kanye West because I think he’s misunderstood as an artiste, designer and as a person. I think Kanye thinks differently from everyone and is trying to make things that haven’t been seen before. I respect his guts and I actually really like his designs. In Nigeria I like Drik merchandise very much because they’re comfortable and really cool.
On a typical day would you prefer to wear Sneakers or heels?
Definitely sneakers lol. They suit my regular moods better and are comfortable. I don’t mind wearing block heels on the days I’m trying to dress up.
What’s that one fashion accessory that you cannot leave the house without?
I probably never leave home without a backpack. A black backpack. I really like cute phone cases too, if they count as a fashion accessory.
Apart from music, and the entertainment lifestyle, what other things are you interested in ?
I’m very interested in clothing and hair. I’m hoping to start a weave business one of these days. I feel like if your hair is laid, your outfit can hardly go wrong so it kinda goes hand in hand with fashion. I’m really passionate about women’s empowerment and fighting for minorities as well; which I hope to do as my platform gets bigger.
Do you have a personal website?
What are your future plans as an artiste, should we expect a project (an EP probably) soon?
The summary of my plans is to “show dem” lol…I plan to do the most this new year both as an artist and under our group ‘Tinny Mafia’…follow me on all my social media platforms to stay updated.
